Perth City - a little bit of everything

So, why Perth? This is actually my third visit to Australia. I have been to Gold Coast and Melbourne and since I managed to get a flight to Perth direct from KL that is relatively cheap, I thought why not. Just a short break over the weekend with a public holiday in between, I hardly need to take leave at all. The flight from KL to Perth only takes 5 hours and guess what, I'm still in the same time zone! Actually this really surprises me.

Anyway, in comparison to Gold Coast which is full of hype, sunshine and glee-ness, and Melbourne which is so cosmopolitan and classy, Perth seems like a little town. The first day I'm here, admittedly I'm a bit zone-out from the midnight flight, I found myself not impressed at all. It's like "that's all?" But towards the third and forth day, Perth begins to grow into me.

To start of with, I've never been to a city where the public transport is totally FREE. Yes, I mean FREE. It doesn't even cost $1.00 like the ding ding tram in Hong Kong. Its' FREE! So you can hop on hop off, sit from north to south, east to west all you like. This is mighty brilliant. Who needs a car when you can have a clean, frequent and FREE public transport? So to explore the Perth City, forget about renting a car, just hop on the CAT bus.

As you know, exploring a city means that you just walk around, walk and walk and when tired, sit down for a cuppa and then walk somemore. So, I guess I dont' need to explain much, just look at some of the sights I managed to captured.

I just have to add that Hummer Limo or whatever Limo seems to be the ride of the town. I mean I was only in Perth for 4 days and I've seen many of them, roaring the streets at night.
This St Mary Cathedral is a surprise sight for me. It is in the middle of the city but sort of hidden in one corner and I happened to walk right into it. Beautiful!

London Court which apparently is built in 1937 sits right in the heart of Perth City in between all the modern buildings. As you walk into the building, you'll suddenly been transported to the world of Old England. Another nice surprise.

OK, shopping in Perth is kind of dissapointing. I absolutely cannot believe I didn't managed to buy 1 single clothing item while in Perth. Not a blouse, not a dress, not even a short or t-shirt. This almost never happens to me. The only time it happen is always because I'm on a one day business trip. Although they have the Harbour Town factory outlet, those stuff just seems like they're from a decade ago, couldn't bring myself to buy a blouse although it only cost AUD5 for one.

This Bell Tower is so much hype I tell you that I brace the cold wind and rain to take some photos else people might say I've never been to Perth. It is the Perth MUST SEE attraction, like Big Ben in London or Eiffel Tower in Paris. It apparently has 12 St.Martin-in-the-Fields bells in it. I must say I don't know the significant. Actually I am so excited to hear it but guess what, it only rang between 12pm-1pm. So unless you're there at that time, you will just get to take the picture like me and go off. I just think that is silly. Shouldn't they like rang it once an hour so that more people will get to experience the sound of the St.Martin-in-the-Fields bells, no?

My first B&B experience

When my hubs told me that he's booking us into a Bed & Breakfast place during our upcoming Perth trip, I think of nothing much. I thought OK, maybe our budget is limited and we have to succumb to back packer's style of staying in a B&B place. Then when he told me that it cost AUD190 per night, I was like, you gotta be kidding me, I thought it cost like 90 bucks or something. Then why don't we add a bit more money and stay in a hotel instead? Oh you don't know, its fun to stay in a proper house, so that our 5 years old son can have more space instead of confined in a room with 4 walls. So, end of discussion, he has already booked it and I just pray it will turn out OK.

So anyway, when we finally arrived in Perth in a cold spring morning, we got our rented car and drives to La Casa Rosa using our GPS.

There you are, hey not bad after all. It is located in East Perth. You can say its like a stone throw away from the CBD area but yet the neighbourhood is absolutely quiet and serene. OK OK, admittedly, I do like to visit houses in a foreign country just to get the feel of the way of life and culture there. I mean I had heaps of fun staying at my friend's place in London.

So we rang the bell of La Casa Rosa and was greeted by Michael. Michael has been so kind to help lug one of the heaviest luggage up to the 2nd floor for us. Once we climbed the stairs up to the 2nd floor, I found myself in a living space of strangers, namely Rose & Michael. OK, there you go. We exchange pleasantries like friends instead of the I show the booking slip at a check-in counter in a hotel lobby with uniformed receptionist. Rose's grandson, Jayden happens to be there and Bryan (my son) immediately feels at home and start playing with Jayden already. Hmmm, OK, so how do I tell him now that we have to go out to sight see. My struggles begins ...

So anyway, after staying at La Casa Rosa for 4 days, I have to say that it does have its good side. Like we can use the kitchen to make coffee or milk for Bryan or to sit in the beautiful patio to enjoy our packed food from the VIetnamese restaurant at the corner as if its gourmet dinner. We can have free access to wifi so I can check my emails and update my FB which would otherwise have cost us a bomb. Rose even allowed us to park our rented car in their garage so we can have a peace of mind that it is in good condition when we return them. Rose is such a wonderful and understanding person so much so when Bryan feels so at home and start wondering in their dining hall and broke a crystal glass, she totally understands and say don't worry about it. Wow, what a relief.
So what does breakfast entails? Well, you woke up and then you walk to the kitchen and tell Rose what you want to eat. Egg sunny side up please, bacon, toasts with butter, capuccino, fruits. And Rose bakes very delicious muffin too. Yum! And she has like 4 different cornflakes for Bryan to choose, so no complaint from our little boy there.

Here's a picture of Rose and my son taken on the day we are leaving.

VW Auto Das Show 2011 (Asia)

OK seriously, I'm not one of those people who goes to auto show or car show or even interested about cars. In fact this is the first time. That is also because we happened to be on my way back home and my hubs practically just swerve into the auto show because of its big white dome that can't be missed from the highway. He then of course told me that the 360 degrees AV show is apparently the first of its kind in Asia or world or something like that. So, I knew the trip was totally planned!

Well, all in all, I must say that the 360 degrees AV show is an eye opening. I wasn't at all ready to take picture or video and so the below video hardly even pass the amateur standard but still, it is an experience that I managed to record using my I-phone.

Anyway, by the time you read this, the show is over because the day we went which was last Sunday is the final showdown. So, here it is, VW cars in cat walk!

Saigon Revisited

I recently revisited Saigon in Vietnam. The moment I walk out of the airport terminal building, there is no mistaken that I have landed in Saigon. Honk Honk Honk Honk Honk, I think you get what I mean. Anyway, as I'm actually on a working trip for the full 5 days I'm there, I didn't bother bringing along a camera. That of course didn't stop me from snapping a few pictures using my I-phone. So, here you are, the I-phoneography of Saigon.
When in Vietnam, its almost a crime not to at least eat 'Pho' once.

Beautiful scooters makes me wanna have one myself
A brand new building with a terrace up in the sky. Beautiful.
A city of 4 million bikes (maybe more). Just close my eyes and cross.
Notre-Dame at night
The statue of Virgin Mary in front of Notre-Dame
The famous Post Office
The Opera House in HDR. Gorgeous.
